Cross-Network Float/Money Exchange Feature
I designed a simple yet innovative feature within the Opareta mobile application specifically for mobile money agents. To facilitate seamless float exchange between Airtel and MTN networks by leveraging a Bank Account Bridge bridge API approach. Once the float is in the designated bank account, from the sending network — the float is then sent to the destination network
Problem statement
Mobile money agents play a crucial role in facilitating financial transactions for communities. However, they face a significant challenge when it comes to exchanging float/money between different merchant network SIM cards, particularly between Airtel and MTN networks.
Challenge
The primary challenge in this scenario is that both Airtel and MTN networks currently do not allow direct exchange of float/money between their respective merchant SIM cards or networks. This lack of interoperability prevents agents from efficiently redistributing their float to meet demand on either network.
Solution
As a lead designer, I designed a simple yet innovative feature within the Opareta mobile application specifically for mobile money agents. Leveraging a Bank Account Bridge bridge API approach to seamlessly facilitate float exchange between Airtel and MTN networks.

Success Metrics
1. Time on Transaction
2. User Adoption
3. Transaction count

Impact
The integration of the Float Exchange feature into the Opareta Agent App has had a profound impact. Through an iterative process, we successfully streamlined the transaction waiting time from 6 minutes to an efficient 3 minutes.

Furthermore, within just the first 28 days of its release, the feature facilitated an average of over 100+ transactions per day. This remarkable level of engagement underscores its value to Opareta and its network of agents.
My systematic User-Centered Design Approach
First, I conducted on-ground research in collaboration with IDEO senior designers through the Last Mile Money Accelerator Program, gaining vital insights into user requirements.

Subsequently, I distilled these findings into user personas and developed an experience map based on the initial user interviews, providing a clear user-centric perspective.

In tandem, I collaborated with the software lead to create a comprehensive API data flow diagram to facilitate seamless float exchange between Airtel and MTN networks. Following this, I designed an initial prototype and conducted user testing to refine the feature based on user reactions.

The next phase involved developing an interactive prototype, incorporating user feedback, and preparing it for implementation. Throughout the process, we monitored feature performance and user behavior using Mixedpanel and in-app event tracking, ensuring continuous refinement and alignment with user needs and expectations.
